找自己 -- “Grandma’s Penghu Bay”
The first time I heard the song, “Sweet Caroline,” I almost jumped out of my seat when everyone around me all began to yell “BA! BA! BA!” so loudly, in such perfect synchrony. Learning English was not easy or natural for me at all. It may be a trigger, not a compliment, for Asian Americans to hear someone tell them, “Oh, your English is so good!” It feels like the speakers assume that it is not possible for these Asian Americans to be born and raised here and English would be their first language. But for me, it’s a real compliment that would make my smile go up to my ears. I want to thank them for acknowledging all those hours of my hard work memorizing English vocabulary and verb conjugations since middle school English class, and even until now, I am still learning this language everyday.
